Aerogel Fiber

Scientists at National University of Singapore have developed an aerogel made from discarded plastic bottles that can be used to filter dust particles. For this reason, scientists made PET plastic and made silicon dioxide.

These fibers are then chemically treated to expand and then dry into lightweight, porous and soft aerogels. This aerogel can be used for various purposes, including sound insulation or dust filters in buildings.

The team found that if aerogels were coated with a compound, the aerogel would be 7 times more efficient in absorbing oil spills than commercial materials. The team obtained the patent of the technology, and after publishing the research results, it began to look for industrial partners to commercialize the technology.
